The election of Donald Trump is much scarier than many may imagine. It's not just that an orange pro-fascist pseudo-Mussolini is poised to get back to the helm of the greatest power in the world. No. It's scarier than that. Because all this carries dire consequences for the future.

The scary thing is that Trump has started a trend and now the entire Republican party is radicalized. First internally, meaning its politicians... that is, I meant to call them "politicians" (the quotation marks here are deliberate - apparently there are no politicians left in that party, only sectarians), but it is also being radicalized externally - in the party followers.

It is not about liberals vs conservatives at all any more )

See, I've got a very squicky theory about Graham: Was McCain the only one tell him to take his meds? :p

Lindsey Graham suggests Israel should nuke Gaza and claims Hiroshima bomb was ‘the right thing’

In all seriousness, there are some times that it seems like not a lot of anything is going on in his brain these days. From my understanding, Hiroshima was the first bomb dropped, so that was needed to coerce Japan into surrendering, or else risk the loss of life of too many soldiers. If I remember correctly, Japan was basically in the middle of surrendering when the bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, and that was not the one that was needed, at least not so soon to Hiroshima. Memory of this history lesson is fuzzy, however.

But back to Graham. Even if he didn't mean it, it's psycho to even talk about nuking a country as a talking point. The second anyone drops a nuke on anyone, we will be in WWIII because all the radicals in the Mid-East will go no holds barred.

Like... don't even joke. We do not want to see those horrors. Pardon my language but these total fucking privileged, bougie idiots in Washington know nothing about the horrors of war. And if war happens, they will be the most comfortable and protected while the rest of the world deals with it. They need to visit the Hiroshima museum and maybe Auschwitz too while they're at it and get a goddamn reality check.

I'd like to believe that many of the prominent Republicans who, despite trashing Trump, said they would vote for him, would actually vote against him. It is well known that Republicans who are vocally opposed to Trump are not only threatened with the loss of their seats in Congress by Trump's mindless minions, but much worse than that, have actually had their lives and their families' lives threatened for crossing Herr Führer.

But we know that even as recently as this past week, Nikki Haley pulled over 20% of the vote at one of the remaining primaries. And I'd suspect that perhaps another 20% of those who voted for Trump did so holding their noses. So this speaks not only to the very real possibility that the disproportionate polling in Trump's favor of just a few months back would actually not be reflected in the general elections, but that there is a very real possibility that Trump faces a contested GOP Convention, where he may not even emerge as the candidate.

It's worth reminding folks that the Convention is not an election - but is in fact the Party's selection of a candidate, and the Republican Party can stack the convention with their own Super Delegates, just as the Dems did a few elections back. I think his own people know this, which is why we see the rather desperate nepotism of putting a family member at the head of the RNC, and even his own young son Baron as a convention delegate.

Don't be surprised to find that the Republican Convention is a very unhappy affair, and that Trump's nomination is not fait accompli.

Another vital swing state embraces draconian abortion law, setting the stage for November.

The Arizona Supreme Court allows a near-total abortion ban to take effect soon

And yet another state that will remain blue... maybe they will throw out their state reps too.

We'll see what happens, but I don't think the GOP is really understanding the potential firestorm they're creating here.

This is the exactly thing to cause a backlash putting Arizona in play for this year. I'm thinking this may put Republicans in a corner.

Local Rush Limbaugh wannabe on the radio the other day was saying, "it's telling" how much Democrats are pushing the abortion issue, in the context of Biden. "They can't run on anything with Biden so they talk about abortion".

The GOP is so out of touch.

Once again we prove that right wingers have never cared about the law or the constitution. Spite, hate, and gaining the power to inflict harm on their enemies are the only things Republicans care about.

Republicans Pull Trigger on Plan to Remove Joe Biden From Ballots

"Absurdity"? Trump is a 91 indictment criminal defendant, meaning there's actually a lot of evidence of his crimes! How old are these "lawmakers'", 15? These clowns with their "Oh yeah?" will get nowhere with this and should really try screaming into a pillow next time so they don't look like such petulant whiners.

I wish them the best of luck.

I wonder, since Biden is president but they are trying to remove him as a candidate, will he have to pay for his own lawyers or can WH counsel do the job? I would think the former.

(Tbh, I think these attempts will summarily be tossed out before anyone needs lawyers)

Senator Ted "Sam I Am" "Cancun" "Two Beers" Cruz is up in arms over an evil President Biden regulation that doesn't exist:

Ted Cruz Rails Against a Beer Limit Guideline That Doesn't Exist

Who says Republicans can't do comedy?

By the way, why isn't Ted Cruz drinking a Lone Star beer?

But seriously. I would much rather be forced to be limited to drink 2 beers a week versus kissing Ted Cruz's ass.

Two beers a day would be a sensible guideline. Understanding that most men will double that and still be in good health. Guidelines aren't rules, they're suggestions. A guideline can make you think twice before getting into alcoholism (a physiological dependence where you feel bad if you're not getting your fix.) Just food for thought for all the whining Righties out there (who've also been whining lately that Canada is "imposing" limits). Then again, Righties, well you know...

Rep. Matt Gaetz files motion to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy, throwing House into new turmoil

I'm struggling to see the end game here. Clearly, it's not just Democrats who helped push the funding through the House; there were enough Republicans to help it along as well. I think the vacate and Speakership vote is going to about as well for MAGAs as the funding vote, unless McCarthy decides to resign. But then there would be another round of insanity in picking a new House Speaker.

All Republicans are doing is showing the country why they should NOT be voted for. If I was a GOP strategist, I'd be pulling my hair out right now considering how vulnerable Biden is, how fragile the Dem-controlled Senate is, and how many opportunities to expand their lead in the House. And this is now the face of the GOP in the House. I know that a lot of so-called Independents are really Republicans who just don't like the label, but even some of them have to acknowledge that this is becoming a shit show.

Romney Says GOP Senators Literally Laughed Out Loud At Trump Behind His Back: ‘Caucus Burst Into Laughter’

"Perhaps Romney’s most surprising discovery upon entering the Senate was that his disgust with Trump was not unique among his Republican colleagues. “Almost without exception,” he told me, “they shared my view of the president.” In public, of course, they played their parts as Trump loyalists, often contorting themselves rhetorically to defend the president’s most indefensible behavior. But in private, they ridiculed his ignorance, rolled their eyes at his antics, and made incisive observations about his warped, toddlerlike psyche. Romney recalled one senior Republican senator frankly admitting, “He has none of the qualities you would want in a president, and all of the qualities you wouldn’t.”"

He has none of the qualities you would want in a President and all of the qualities you wouldn’t.

This is just confirmation of what we already know. The only people who respect Trump are the idiot MAGA base.

It also goes to show how weak and spineless the Republicans are. Very few of them are willing to say what they actually think publicly. And all of them are hoping the charges stick so they can be rid of Trump. It’s incredibly sad. I have lost a lot of respect for them.

Disagreeing on politics is fine but, when you endanger the country by letting an authoritarian toddler take over your party that places you in a different category.

I can’t even imagine the shame Ted Cruz must feel. These are educated people in the Senate. And educated people know how terrible Trump is. It’s like Tucker privately mocking Trump and his Presidency saying:

"I hate him passionately"

The lack of courage is astounding.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis booed at vigil as hundreds mourn more racist killings

He did, I believe, make a statement of condemnation of the killer's action. But he should have known better than to attend the vigil, given his policies on certain sensitive issues.

On the other hand, why not. He's an ignorant, backward dick who deserves all the ridicule he invites. I pity anyone who considers DeSantis presidential material, just as much as I do where Trump and his MAGA cultists are concerned. They're both an incompetent embarrassment to America and the world.

The thing is the Republicans painted him as the next savior of the GOP. Meanwhile in Florida where people know DeSantis better, this is what's happening. Only Republicans support DeSantis, the rest of the state is starting to despise him using the state government as his personal weapon.

So he's a liar, thief and conman... Sounds like he's got a good chance to be the Republican nominee for president in 2024. ;-)

Yes, just a little. Adapted from the article:

If those lies are true (the guy is indeed a fraud), in the old days (20 years ago), the Republican would run him for congress over this. But, we live in a time where Republicans value those that lie, so this will probably land him a choice committee assignment and fast-track him for party leadership.

I look forward to hearing him lecture us about honesty and transparency.

Republicans shrug off Trump '24 bid: 'The excitement’s just not there'
The former president is not bending the GOP to his will like he used to.

We can all take from this what we may, I suppose. But I seem to sense much of what the article conveys, that is less energy and enthusiasm for Trump this time - along with a general GOP willingness to push back against him without the usual Trumpian repercussions.

I suspect the Don senses the above as well, and that might factor into his not pushing-back against challengers to the often high degree he usually does.

Also might explain his angry social media messages lately.

I'd hope on numerous issues that Republicans might find some little bit of decency to turn against this traitor as he'd add new wrongs; but also felt that the one thing most likely to get them to turn on him was when he looked like he'd lose them elections instead of win them.

I think they hugely failed on the decency issue, almost all of them never turning on him for any good reason, but that we're seeing the other reason of him losing elections now cause it. They get no credit for this. It's like giving credits to Nazis for doing the right thing by losing WWII. It wasn't their choice. They get zero points from this.

"Vote for me or the country will be destroyed!" says Biden.

Biden warns GOP could set nation on ‘path to chaos’ as democratic system faces strain

Normally, you'd just call this the usual desperate scaremongering and I'd agree with you, but on a second review, he might have a point (or two) on this account.

I know the MAGAs have the memory of a goldfish, but most of us still remember 2 short years ago when these guys did actually actively try to throw democracy out of the window altogether because they didn't like the result of the election.

What else would you call the mentality of "if my side didn't win, it was rigged and we should overthrow the government!" if not anti-democracy? So sorry their butthurt feelings don't overrule US democracy, but he does have a point here.

The deeper issue is, Republicans can't win on issues. That's why they don't have any positions outside of fear mongering themselves, culture wars, election disinformation and voter disenfranchisement. The last time they tried to argue an issue was healthcare and that was years ago and they couldn't even come up with a credible plan to push. They learned their lesson - they don't need to have a position on issues and they don't need to govern because their base doesn't care about those things.

When was the last time you heard a Republican have a substantive position on any issue that didn't involve mentioning Democrats, the "left", the "woke mob", LGBTQ+ people, criminals, bureaucrats, BLM, the "deep state", Hillary, Pelosi, Hunter, AOC or immigrants?

Today he loves Trump, yesterday he hated Trump, the day before he loved Trump, before that he called Trump every name in the book and we should pay attention to what Graham says why?

Sen. Lindsey Graham said if Trump is prosecuted for mishandling classified information, 'there will be riots in the streets'

That is their only way out of this legal shitstorm: they will literally incite violence if the heat gets turned up too high. Don't think they're above it - they're not. They don't give a single solitary shit what happens next.

If they think they can stop AG Garland by inciting mass civil unrest, then that is what they will do. They don't care if people get hurt or killed. That's why I keep saying the Republican party has to be destroyed and then remade. There are no good Republicans. They are now what the Southern Democratic Party was in the 1870s and 1880s: a militia group that poses as a political party.

Cuck Cruz and others of his Trumplicking ilk are a menace to equality, democracy, and equal representation under the law. They will not stop until their dreams of a theocratic state are realized. Folks should have let them have South Carolina when "Christian Exodus" was a thing, and exiled the lot of them to fend for themselves.

Yeah... I actually may want them to over turn all of it and watch what happens. I'm just curious, you know.

My bet? Nothing's going to happen when it's overturned. A few deplorables might whine and kvetch just as they did when the Supreme Court announced its recent ruling on Roe vs. Wade, but it will quickly die off and they'll naturally just fade into their continuing irrelevance and obscurity.

I'll be waiting ever so patiently from a distance to watch and catch a few laughs at the expense of the few deplorables in question when it happens though.

There has been this acceptance that of course the GOP will take back the House based on the party in power losing seats yada yada. I don’t think that’s gonna carry this time out.

What is it the GOP is going to argue come midterms? They got covid right? They got Trump right? And speaking of the guy Republicans suddenly don’t want to talk about: he’s going to be a gigantic presence, reminding everyone of what you guys just flushed down the toilet a few months ago. Think about all those Trump candidates that will have to bow and scrape and answer for all of his now even more dementia-filled comments. What will the GOP messaging be to counter Trump’s embrace of the Jan 6 terrorists?

I dunno what’s gonna happen in the midterms. No one does. But this idea that the GOP has it on lock just cause... bwahahah good luck with that.

My take? They'll run the usual game: blame Democrats for whatever bad stuff they did while claiming credit for whatever good stuff Democrats did. Mix it with robust voter suppression while hoping for some more friendly foreign interference. Et voila! But will it work well enough this time around?

Moments ago at the Senate Health Committee hearing, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Dr. Anthony Fauci engaged in a fiery clash in which both men accused the other of lying.

The fireworks begin at minute 2:53 so you may want to fast forward:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kB2wVer3E1s

Rand Paul must be wearing Dr. Fauci's foot in his ass on the way home from this encounter.

But I don't feel even one ounce of sympathy for him. Rand Paul should die in a fire. He had Covid last March and while waiting for the results of his Covid test he managed to get his sweat on at the Senate gym then for a swim in the members-only facility's infinity pool. The gym was closed because of the Covid outbreak but multiple senators were still able to access it via a keypad, including Rand Paul. Gotta get in one more workout before those test results come in, right? There was a photo taken of him casually having lunch inside the Senate GOP lunch room. Mitt Romney had self-quarantined because his wife has multiple sclerosis and would die if she became infected. And here was Rand Paul, possibly spreading the virus around for 2 weeks before he got tested, endangering the life of anyone he came into contact with.

I don't feel sorry for this egotistical maniac at all and I completely empathize with his neighbor who beat the shit out of him. It's understandable.

As for these hearings, they end up being platforms for pontificating. Too many elected reps are more concerned with histrionics than gleaning information…

How is it the so called Republicans were all for multiple investigations into Benghazi, yet when it comes to investigating perhaps the biggest threat to their nation's root political system since the Civil War, they want no part in it? Is that an admission they know it will NOT bode well for them?

'The truth is hard': Senate Republicans block commission to study Capitol riot of Jan. 6

Why should it bode well for them and why are they able to block something based on a fear it will be used against them politically? Have they EVER shied away from taking every advantage/exploiting ANY and EVERYTHING they can find to harm their political opponents and how is it they were all FOR NOT holding the person, (the same Republican head of the Senate gave a speech on, calling him accountable for the events of 1-6-21)?

What the hell sort of hold does Donald Trump have over members of Congress? Their marital affairs, some other dirt? How is it they choose lies and sin over truth and honor and how is it they believe they will come out on the better side of what their decisions are saying about them?

The party of Lincoln may end up proving his words about a "divided house" correct...

Over 100 Republicans, including former officials, threaten to split from the G.O.P.
"More than 100 Republicans, including some former elected officials, are preparing to release a letter this week threatening to form a third party if the Republican Party does not make certain changes, according to an organizer of the effort."

This could be devastating for the GOP. A moderate conservative breakaway party would split the vote and almost guarantee the Democrats' success in future elections.

Of course how much weight it carries depends a great deal on who these 100 are:

"The list of people signing the statement includes former officials at both the state and national level who once were governors, members of Congress, ambassadors, cabinet secretaries, state legislators and Republican Party chairmen, Mr. Taylor said."

This is what should be worrying the GOP the most - because these are all former Republican officials. Future success of this project will depend on how many moderates are willing to make a change and whether they can pull from independents.

Meanwhile, some of the actions and statements of members of the Republican political class continue to amuse.

But realistically, if the Republicans split into orange Tweetycult fanatics and normal conservatives, this would result in them losing every election for a while. After what they've done, I wouldn't mind seeing them lose for a decade or so. However, I would put the chances of this happening right around zero percent.

Mitch McConnell Vows to Block Biden’s Entire Agenda Just to Be a Dick

Mitch McConnell stated; "100% of our focus is on stopping this new administration." Mitch McConnell did this when he made it clear that his top political agenda was to make sure that Barack Obama would be a one-term president. Mitch McConnell labeled himself as the 'grim reaper'. There's a clear distinction between Democrats and Republicans right now, a moment of clarity for everyone. Democrats are the party of getting things done and Republicans are the party of obstruction. Democrats believe in democracy, Republicans believe in autocracy. Democrats believe in 'building back better'. The American Rescue Plan, the American Jobs Plan, the American Families Plan and the Republicans are all about grievance and xenophobia.

Why would anyone clap this? The country needs infrastructure investment, the QOP isn't offering anything viable. It needs healthcare and public resource spending; the QOP isn't offering anything viable. Biden, for all his ills, has done a good job of governing for all states.
