Hi again, you bunch of pissed off whiners LJ-ers who want nothing more but to get back to normal LJ services! I hope this post will pass through the LJ sieve as there seems to be a limit for the length of posts lately (see below). Anyway, if it doesn't post I'll cut the first half shorter and the second I'll post as a first comment - which I suggest that you do too when you make longer posts (yay, we Bulgarians are so cunning!). So I'll try to make this follow-up update as concise as possible. Your daily scan through the Russian press found this:

The N.American and S.American hackers finally left LJ alone.
The LJ attacks are over
http://www.newsinfo.ru/news/2011-07-30/item/758660/
...But there are still some difficulties. Most attacks originated in South America, and included not just virus attacks but also massive servers hosted in North America.
It's unclear when all problems will be solved.
No data was lost.
LJ doesn't allow long posts

Blogger Anton Nosik believes the LJ admins have blocked posts longer than 2048 symbols deliberately, and make us believe it's a result of the attacks.

It's not just the attacks; it's about the incompetence of the LJ admins.
There've been calls to suspend the dissident bloggers to get rid of the targets and avoid further attacks.
The attacks are part of a plan to weaken the opposition before the coming elections.

Prominent bloggers are planning to leave LJ, or at least are creating reserve mirror blogs elsewhere (some famous Russian journalists and opposition politicians are listed).

Blogger #1 drugoi is moving to a standalone mode. His hopes are on Google+.

Interesting poll: what would you do if "Live" Journal finally dies? a) I'll kill my PC. 2) I'll commit suicide. 3) I'll sue them in Strasbourg. 4) I'll join Limonov's party. 5). I'll opt for Google+. 6) Will go to Blog-F. 7) What is LJ?
...And I think I've hit length limit.

Date: 30/7/11 17:52 (UTC)WTF, LJ!?
Well ultimately, that was their purpose, right? So they've won? Will we let them win?
We're better than that.
Besides, if the bloggers move to Dreamwidth, Google+ and other places, who's to say that those won't become the next targets? Divide and conquer at its best. I'm really pissed right now.

Date: 30/7/11 17:55 (UTC)After all it's not the place, it's the people in it what makes it great. If most of us can jump over to a new promised land things could become interesting.

Date: 30/7/11 18:00 (UTC)Luzribeiro is right (above). The purpose of these attacks is exactly this: to disperse the communities and destroy the existing relationships between prominent bloggers, particularly the Russian ones and especially those with opposition and dissident inclinations. We've been made collateral victims of these fights.
Hopes are that the LJ staff will finally get the memo and will take the adequate measures. In fact, after the April attacks they did buy new equipment and upgraded their defenses, but this time the hackers chose a different tactic, so they'll have to adapt to that accordingly.

Date: 30/7/11 18:06 (UTC)I know it's cynical but indeed, if the Russian dissidents go elsewhere and we go to Dreamwidth, we'll be spared further attacks. Let them have their fights elsewhere.
Or we could wait for a while and see if LJ will fix their defenses promptly.

Date: 30/7/11 21:52 (UTC)Once a month, I do a comic book sales post with heavy HTML coding for the sales charts and graphs.
Just ONE of those charts, as its own post with no other text, already puts me over the 2048-symbol limit.
I CAN'T split those up into smaller fragments.

Date: 30/7/11 21:56 (UTC)Of course that Russian blogger and some others wouldn't mind coming up with some elaborate conspiracy theories, like the LJ staff are trying to silence them (but are still giving them chance to post up to 2048 symbols, huh).

After several months of absence, I tried an OP a few days ago and after several 'error' notices dealing with varnish (wtf?) and a couple of hours trying it finally posted.
Through the evening, when I tried to answer comments, I got more of the same. I finally gave up.
I'm not likely to post again (due to aggravation/exasperation) but I'll be watching for a move by T/P to another host. Here's hoping.

Date: 31/7/11 11:53 (UTC)Maybe we should go to whammo.com (not a real posting site), now made with high impact space age plastic because we all know that something else, especially newer, is better.
It amazes me how quickly a forum that has such international and cultural diversity is being disparaged with threats of abandonment. There has been talk about going to Google+ even though it is currently in beta with all the bugs and feature shortcomings of a new site.
This place has been maintained and groomed for years. If anyone wants to abandon it, be my guest. But ask yourself if you are really going to be moving to something that is truly better tech-wise and content-wise.

Has anyone set up a placeholder community in dreamwidth under the name "TP"? It need not be a permanent switch, but could be a place for people to get their political discussions on when/if LJ goes down for a period of days.
