What a fallout, Re: the whole Kavanaugh thingy. I've been observing it with morbid fascination of some sorts, frankly. And I've been having yet another one of those "WTF, America!?" moments. Seriously.

First of all, is Brett Kavanaugh, like, the ONLY judge left in America? I mean, WTF? Why not just move on from this royally flawed time-bomb of a man and nominate someone who can actually cruise through the whole nomination process? The GOP has to die on THIS hill? Why!?

What amazes me that the more unhinged about these guys' supporters would genuinely believe Hillary Clinton ran a child sex ring out of a pizza restaurant - but won't believe a sexual assault victim who passed a polygraph.

And WTF is wrong with these people and their stupid excuses? "Why is she coming out NOW, hmmm?" Well, as Samantha Bee said, the woman that Brock Turner raped reported it immediately, and I guess that wasn't fair because it would ruin his future - but now Christine Blasey Ford is reporting Kavanaugh's alleged assault 36 years later, and somehow she's ALSO ruining his future? How much future do rich, white guys get to have? Eh?

And all this GOP spin on what a Devil's Triangle and what Boof means. WOW. In case you aren't 38-58 years old, Boof doesn't mean Fart, it means anal sex. Period. The Devil's Triangle isn't a drinking game, it's a 3 way sex with 2 guys and a girl where the guys don't make eye contact. Because it ain't manly enough. FFFF isn't the way his friend started the word "fuck", it means Find'em, Finger'em, Fuck'em, Forget'em.

When I say I want to "burn Lindsay Graham's house to the ground", I'm of course referring to a very popular drinking game that everyone knows about. Right?

I could go on, but you already know it doesn't matter anyway. I would've had more respect for him if he had walked out and said, "I apologize. I probably did all those things but I really don't remember them now. We had beer. I like beer. We liked beer a lot, so we drank beer. A lot. I'm not proud of the way I behaved back then (at the time we drank beer; because we liked beer), and I wasn't alone in that behavior. But I promise you I'll work for a better environment not just for our young girls but for all of us. I'm sorry for all the pain I've caused, and I promise to work to amend that". That's what a real judge would sound like. Not the vile, entitled, beer-faced motherfucker and poor excuse of a human being that we saw.

The GOP's behavior doesn't surprise me even one bit, sadly. Just look at their record. In 1974 they voted against allowing women to apply for a mortgage or credit card without a man. In 1978 they voted against banning employers from firing pregnant women. In 2012 they voted against the Equal Pay for Equal Work for Women Act. And now they're prepared to go to tremendous lengths to "ram" a vile misogynistic asshole into the SCOTUS, just because he has vowed to push their anti-abortion agenda through.

And the Douchebag-In-Chief is setting the tone for all this. After all, he was the one who mocked a prisoner of war. He mocked a disabled reporter. He mocked a family who lost a son in battle. And now he has mocked a woman who was sexually assaulted. How are we to expect even a trace of basic humanity from this guy and his horde? What gives!?

I think I know what's going on there. Here's what all this might be about:

What a clusterfuck, right? The curious thing is, none of this is going to change the fact that the Republicans will somehow retain their hold on Congress, and Trump will somehow get re-elected for a second term.

But haven't you heard that Dr. Ford's brother worked with a distant relation of Peter Strzok?

And the Arch of Baal was erected in Washington DC? LITERAL CHILD SACRIFICE!

The logic is inescapable! Think of the children!

I like beer, I like weed, I like uppers and psychedelics and all the ways of altering my perception I can do with reasonable safety; never once has my drug or alcohol abuse led me to rape, and I’ve gone for close to overdose levels. It’s not a valid excuse though, I suppose, for some folk it may be mitigating circumstances.

The thing is you would have thought folk monitored themselves, or monitored each other. When we did stupid drinking games we were lucky. No-one did anything really stupid and no-one died. Folk did get thrown into fountains, and some idiots had been known to jump off bridges into rivers, but as for fumbling in the dark with members of the other gender... well you had to be a gentleman, and courteous.

What I find amazing is that male privilege and beer gives chaps a free pass on the gentlemanliness and the courtesy because boys will be boys.

This is why the Anglo-Saxon peoples are rather better when their young men are educated through brutal discipline; when you step out of line it hurts, and it's a lesson you don't forget.

Male privilege existed alongside extreme male discipline; Neither were good things, but when we removed the extreme discipline part of the equation we were left with privilege run rampant, which has only begun to be addressed properly now through the MeToo movement.

Without discipline, men are a liability. I'd say the same is true of women too, but men have the added problems of testosterone, which skews their behaviour even more. For many decades we have been fed the story of women being "difficult" at specific times of the month. What we forget is the context of those "funny turns", which is of universal low-level male violence and aggression, and which sometimes breaks out into serious violence, rape, and murder.

My mother told me if any man had ever hit her or beat her, she would have stabbed him in his sleep. I believe her. She is 5ft tall and will not be intimidated by anyone. Some guys got lucky by avoiding her, I'd guess.

I wish more women were the same, but I fear we'd lose more than half the men in the world overnight.

Haha!
No longer interested.

As an aside, having looked at the incel movement, I guess I've always been in a position of privilege myself. Though not an "alpha male" by any stretch of the imagination, I was reasonably good-looking, charismatic (requirement in the music biz - lots of it was artificial swagger, but some of it stuck after time) and known to be, er, interested in matters carnal, if not actually competent. The fact that I was the skinniest snake-hipped guitarist in town meant that I didn't have to persuade anyone to do anything really. Even so, I had my fallow seasons. (It wasn't as though I looked like a young Johnny Depp. I was OK-looking for a guitarist, not a movie star. Also getting laid often depended on what hair I was wearing that season: blue spikes, sideshow Bob dreads, or a shaved pate; each had rather different responses from potential bed-partners.)

I guess if you look like Harvey Weinstein your options are very different. The overall gender-context of the whole debate is so damn complicated; but there must be rules of interaction between folk which are determined by informed consent within the context of the law.

As always with me I take each case on it's merits. The Ronaldo rape case is being re-opened as we speak. You'd have thought that there was a guy who could get laid just by batting his eyelashes at a lass. Her testimony indicates her amazement at his behaviour given who he was/is, and his David Beckham-like super-footballer attractiveness.

Nothing about any of these cases makes any sort of sense, so we have to assume that there is something from the limbic system which, when interacting with testosterone or adrenaline, over-rides sense completely in some people, the overwhelming majority of these being male.

This is becoming a bit depressing. Maybe it's time for those straight/straight-ish chaps who don't agree with the current way of going about things to join in with the LGBTQ community in promoting a different set of models. Maybe the BDSM community can give young men an idea of the rules of engagement wherein it is possible to dominate and assert within the context of informed consent. As long as the safe word stands for "No", then you're good to go. (BTW, not my thing, but I have known folk for whom all of that was a requirement. But when preparation and clean-up takes that long, really, who can be bothered except enthusiasts?)

Sometimes rape may be about sex as much as power. So we are thinking more about the rules of appropriate sexual engagement in the modern world, and how to allow our cultural norms to adapt to the new reality. Some folk, of course, would wish that none of this were happening, and that women were chained to the house and children, and sodomites were righteously stoned to death as per Old Testament rules. And the folk that have such beliefs are often also the folk who believe "boys will be boys" as long as it's not their own daughter in the firing line.

As for me, I'll stick to rum and sodomy, so to speak, but shall do without the lash, being averse to pain.

If your daughter claims she was sexually assaulted, you’d want a full investigation. If your son was falsely accused of sexual assault, you’d want a full investigation. What is the real issue here???? This is not a partisan issue. Sexual assault is NOT a partisan issue.
