We're from all corners of the world here. I'm sure you must love the place you live in, right now. So if you had to choose one single picture to characterize your place of residence with, which one would it be? Show it here and explain why it's the most characteristic sight for your town.

You could also add one for the town where you were born, in case it's different from your current one.

Mine:

Place of birth:
Hafnarfjörður, Iceland --

A re-enactment of a Viking fight at the annual Viking games.

Place of residence:
Uppsala, Sweden --

The Uppsala university, which gives the old capital the typical small-town charm.

Your turn now!

Yes, the Dacians (or Getae) were a northern branch of Thracians, I guess they were similar to Celtic tribes in the West. For the first 100-200 years they were able to deflect the Romans and often crossed south over the Danube to pillage the lands across the water. In 106 AD Trajan's legions built a huge bridge over the Danube (with stone pillars) and were able to invade properly, settling, creating the urbe and making us a Latin-speaking land.

The more cynical version that I heard is that the Roman soldiers raped the Dacian women and thus the Vlachian nation was born... It's an over-simplification of course but still.

Basically, since they were conquerors, that's how it would happen. The able men and boys would usually commit suicide by cliff-diving on stakes rather than be enslaved. Decebal committed suicide once the gold was robbed, however the Romans also did not remain as occupiers for too long either. Interesting that also later in the middle ages, fighting the Ottoman invasions, the men would first burn down their villages and grain, then hide in the forest and do squeeze attacks.

Yep, the so called Haidouks. Guerrilla warfare at its best. They would hide in the mountains in summer and attack the Ottomans from there (while also being fed by the local populace, often taking things by force), and in the winter they'd ascend on their villages and remain hidden around the houses. Pretty good tactic for disrupting the Ottoman rule.
