The Affordable Care Act, commonly dubbed Obamacare, turned 1 year old last week. The confusion over this law has gone from 55% to 53% in that year's time. There has been a lot of discussion surrounding the law, but not a lot of information about it. There has been mischaracterizations about it with monikers such as "Death Panels" and "Government Run Healthcare". There are claims that the government, as opposed to insurance companies, come between you and your doctor. There has been attempts to adjudicate from the floor of Congress by declaring the law unconstitutional before the Supreme Court has had an opportunity to rule on it; and calling for its repeal. Some claim that the law has gone too far; and others, like consumer activist Ralph Nader, who claims it didn't go far enough.
Nancy Pelosi stated "We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of controversy.”. The statement seemed pretty ridiculous at the time, but considering the ongoing confusion, the discussion seems to have been about the ideology surrounding it and very little about the substance of the law itself.
Many Americans count on Consumer Report reviews of products before making a market decision. Many find the Consumer Reports review to be the final and determining factor in some of their biggest buying decisions. This is what Consumer Reports had to say about the Health Care law. Interestingly enough, they also include a descriptive PDF download that includes the features in plain English.
What do you think it would take for America to have a discussion about what the Affordable Care Act is and away from personal opinion of what it should be?

Date: 29/3/11 13:17 (UTC)As the O/P has said, there is a lot of ideological discussion going on and not a lot of facts going on. Of these people that are finding out about Obamacare, where are they getting their information? Is it from reliable sources or demagogy.
There actually has been a lot of reporting about the meat of the law. It depends where you look. I tried to present a reliable look at it in the O/P

Date: 29/3/11 13:19 (UTC)They aren't? Wow. There seems to be many, many recent AND older news on the subject. (http://www.google.com/search?q=obamacare+waiverts&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbs=nws:1&sa=X&ei=vNuRTYXWMuaU0QG-0vnMBw&ved=0CCEQBSgA&q=obamacare+waivers&spell=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=be592e69a3582513"") How did you miss those? I guess you weren't paying a lot of attention to the news...
Anyway, if you want 'in depth' information, there have been plenty of news articles written on the subject. Complete with exposes and insider information. Enjoy.

Date: 29/3/11 14:04 (UTC)Repeal.
And I'm dead serious when I say that as a matter of discussion, because the entire thing was passed in a rather poor way, to the point where even the people who were in support of it didn't quite know what was in what they were passing.
If we want those kinds of reforms, they need to be discussed piece by piece, not in an omnibus bill that covers too many issues and has too many things going on. Want to have a discussion about preexisting conditions? Sure, but let's have that discussion separate from the discussion on a public option. How many people in support of the bill wanted to see Health Savings Accounts (one of the better things the government has done for health care in recent times) go away?
Plus, a repeal and piece-by-piece discussion would do a great job of ending the debate as to whether the parts were truly more popular than the whole. Much of the confusion and dislike of the bill is based on how it was passed, I think - the bad blood created by the process created a situation where misinformation and fearmongering on both sides of the coin assisted in the mess we've got now.
Good angle on this, by the way.

Date: 29/3/11 14:39 (UTC)The biggest reason it wasn't done this way is because recent history has shown us that piecemeal reforms aren't going to happen. Hillarycare is the prime example of that. And that happened during a raging economy.
Obamacare was part of Obama's platform. Even he will admit that it was more of a starting point and not a highly polished product. Getting compromised health care legislation in place was a priority because prior efforts had failed.

Date: 29/3/11 18:09 (UTC)Repeal would go a long way in healing the wounds caused by it along with a public apology by O and Co. The American public, in general, would probably forgive him, and he'd make up ground with independents for 2012. Then both sides could actually pass what they agree on (no dishonest bipartisan meeting fiascos like O moderated last time). Actually let both sides have a voice and don't set dealbreakers.

Date: 29/3/11 18:13 (UTC)As the bill currently is working, it's proven not to be the Yellow Brick Road or the start of the Apocalypse the way people predicted it to be. However the requirement to mandate health insurance for everyone and penalize the poor to me makes any statement that it's anti-corporation and "SOZIALIZT" (that is to say treating the poor as humans, not animals) seem kind of ironic.

Will it increase or decrease Medicare Spending?
Can you keep your existing plan?
Will unaccountable bureaucrats step between you and your doctor to determine what treatments are available to you or not?
The answer to all of those questions is purely dependent on your assumptions and point of view.
