I'm torn about the President's Afghan policy. Do we support an obviously corrupt government, like we did in Vietnam? Do we allow a nation that will be built on drug trafficing to grow? Has history shown us that no outside nation can win a war in that region? Do we abandon them, like we did in the 80s and earlier in this decade? IF so are we somewhat responsible for the abuses that the women of the region will again have to face? Do those of us who chose not to fight, have a right to ask young men and women to fight for us? I think when listening to the speech, that we should remember that there is no good answer.

I'm curious if the limited support by some allies in regards to troop numbers will have an effect on future conflicts.

You mean like if Belize invades France will we only send like 4 troops to give them a hand?

Why waste lives when we could just deploy drones?

We don't have much choice, the corruption won't go away if we leave.

If we leave that will definitely be the result, plus much, much worse.

No. The British after defeating the Afghans in the Second Afghan War established a strong Afghanistan that was successful and served British interests, even after Afghan independence in 1929, Afghanistan was a stable, self sufficient and relatively progressive country. It is popular and easy to portray Afghanistan as a perpetual and everlasting cluster fuck. This is not the case. Until the 1980's, Afghanistan was a pretty stable, friendly place. Ask all the hippies who trekked through on their way to Kashmir.

No. The Afghans believe (with some justification) that this will be the result. We must work hard not to live down to their expectations if we want to succeed.

Yes, we will be, and for much worse.

Since it is a volunteer force, yes we do.

There is no easy answer, that isn't the same thing as no good answer.

Corruption is America's only way

Yeah right! As if a military and political system as "pure and innocent" as that of the US has the capacity to address the problem. I don't know of any cure for corruption that involves kowtowing to American interests. It's like purifying cloth by using it as a sanitary napkin.

History has shown it is possible to beat the Iranian tribes there, but only if you completely disregard anything smacking of human decency and wage a war with the kind of savage cruelty that marked Timur's leadership. As in start in one part of the tribal lands and create ever-larger mounds of skulls until either they're all dead or they quit, and either way the conquering power wins.

Afghanistan is a murky situation without any good solutions and a shitload of possible bad ones. And even worse, precious few ways to change any of those options.

Actually, history told us that for centuries people dreamed of flight, and it was never that people thought it was impossible, the debate was between powered v. non-powered flight. And history, too, records that in Renaissance-era Italy Leonardo Da Vinci had designs for a workable ornithopter.

Now, skeptics did say people couldn't fly, yes. But history did not say that.

That's what analogies are for.

If we accept that history says it's impossible to win in Afghanistan, that it is and will always be where empires go to die, as claimed by the OP, then we have to accept that the same claim was true based on similar evidence for manned flight - up until the point where evidence proved otherwise.
