Ugh, did I get the names right? Well. I'm not much into world politics so how would I know (I lied, duh).
I'm used to this. Geneva regularly gets blocked by the global military armed to the teeth who don't want to allow the public's love reach the Chosen Ones. This place gets chosen for such events quite frequently, and for several good reasons.
One, Switzerland's strict neutrality. It's been there for more than 2 centuries. This has given this country an aura of impartial mediator of international issues, and a trusted diplomatic representative between countries. Many a serious problem have been addressed on this soil for that specific reason. Just to mention that Switzerland represents the US in front of Iran, since those two lovedoves have ceased diplomatic relations for some time.
Neutrality doesn't just mean non-participation in conflicts. There's the Swiss humanitarian and peaceful contributions, promoting international solidarity, things like that.
Of course Piden and Butin couldn't meet in either one's country. And what better neutral ground than Switzerland? And what better Swiss town for the purpose than Geneva? After all, this city already hosts 39 international institutions, organizations, bodies, a secretariat established under a treaty, about 750 NGOs, and 177 embassies. This has created a lot of expertise in trade, labor ,health, peace, human rights, migration, telecommunications, science, and sustainable development.
Mentioning science, there's CERN of course. And the LHC. Personally involved there, to an extent. Long story. I'm in love with the place.
In result of all this, Geneva is probably the world's most active diplomatic hub, with 3,400+ meetings taking place here annually, involving heads of stat, ministers, dignitaries and other prominent figures.
So I'd say there's a lot of symbolism behind this choice of place. In a sense, it signals the coming of the two most important heads of state back to a place of dialogue. We'll see how that goes in the long run. Although expectations are rather low, to be frank.
