California has adopted a law that would make all energy green by 2045. Gov. Jerry Brown has signed the bill just a few days before the climate change meeting in San Francisco. While environmentalists are ecstatic, the energy lobby is skeptical about these targets. Brown is contesting a number of federal policies coming from Trump's administration, from energy to civil rights.

The plan is to entirely shift California to green energy by 2045. The new law will make energy suppliers restructure their portfolio towards renewable sources and zero carbon emissions. They will be obligated to form at least 60% of their energy base from clean sources by 2030, and by 2045 that would be 100%. California vows to honour the Paris climate accords.

Pacific Gas and Electric reps have expressed concerns that these requirements would make them incompetitive as they do not reflect the capabilities of the energy sector right now. The effect would be soaring energy prices, and ultimately a burden on the state economy.

All of this is in defiance of Trumps decision to take the US out of the Paris accords. California is among his staunchest opponents in this respect, having launched a number of lawsuits against his administration. Other states have also announced they would continue to respect the Paris accords, despite the White House's policy.

One of the side effects of Trump's poor popularity is the increased activity (on a state level), and defiance of the federal directives by a number of states. California has followed Hawaii which adopted a similar law planning to achieve a 100% green target by the same deadline (2045). Other states, cities and companies are also on board, including NYC.

By the way, here are a few informative maps about public opinion in the US on the subject of climate change:

Good. Progress won't move as quickly as it otherwise could, but it's still going to continue.
