Then they were never equal and/or inclusive societies in the first place. Pretending to be equal and repeatedly telling yourself that you're an inclusive society still does not make it so. Sweeping the mounting integration problems under the rug and pretending they've gone away is not a good way to foster an equal, open society. And all that dirt under the rug is inevitably going to come bite you on the ass at some point.
