First, let's start with the video:

Then, let's look at the questions.

Feel free to take the quiz yourself if you dare. Myself, I scored a +9.  I never had to take a step back, but I did miss a few steps forward (I am a straight, white, male of mostly Anglo-European descent, but I did grow up pretty darn poor by North American standards to parents who did not have HS diplomas).

I do want to point out one thing, though: the point of this is not to shame anyone, nor does it suggest that everything should be equal.  It will never be equal, and obviously the inner-city black kid and the upper-middle class white suburban kid alike had zero control over what family they were born into.

The point is to show people who don't think privilege is a big deal are wrong, that "if you work hard enough, you can succeed" is not exactly true. If you are far enough behind, you will *never* catch up if the system is against you- and denying one's own privilege is not helping others to catch up in any manner.

See, I'm kinda dumb*, so this was the smartest thing I could come up with to-evening. You're welcome to laugh at me.

It's the old worn-out quiz: "Which are the 3 top... X".

So my question to you is this. Which are the 3 things you love the most about your respective society, and which are the 3 things you hate the most?

I'll ask those who choose to participate to please try not to bash other peoples. Just stick to your own society. I'm aware that, since the majority of members are American, we'd probably end up talking about the US (for the most part), but even so, I'd love to see as many perspectives as possible. Also it's not like we don't have quite a prominent "forrinner" base, so... We might learn a few things about each other.

Anyway. Because I started it, I'm first.

My take on my people )

Your turn!

We've been yelling at each other a lot lately. And there have been many threads with lengthy accusations of each other occupying some bizarre place on the political spectrum. With that in mind, I thought I could dig into my rating scale creation skills and help us all identify where we are on the spectrum from "entirely reasonable political discussant" and "utter and total whackadoodle wingnut".

Here's a quiz.

Two countries.

Country A has a dictatorship. The people rebel and take down the dictator.
Country B has a dictatorship. The people rebel to take down the dictator.

The US response?

The US president mentions country A in his State of the Union speech (wow!): "The USA stands with the people of Country A and supports the democratic aspirations of ALL people".

Meanwhile, the US Secretary of State comments on country B, "We're monitoring the situation closely and we call on all parties to show restraint and refrain from violence".

Additionally, a prominent opposition figure said, "We're watching these developments very carefully, and beyond that I will not comment". Well, at least he also openly admitted, "This is a very important ally of ours".

That's the rub, isn't it? One is "an important ally". The other? Who cares. Let'em have their democracy, it doesn't matter.
There's also that: who's the rebelling opposition in country B (the "friendly" country)? Islamist fundamentalists (so, not-good-people, they hate Freedom™).

Did you guess already which country A and country B are? ;-)

I think there are some new folks around and that's great! Everyone here seems to think they are so smart and an expert on something in this community. So, tell us about your political education. Did you take courses, read books? How did you gain the knowledge you use in our discussions?

1. How did you get interested in politics?
2. How do you learn about politics, history, economics, sociology etc.?
3. What political subjects do you feel you know more about than most people here?
4. What political subjects do you wish you knew more about?
5. What political subjects do you find boring?

Also, what about your political personality? I have made a quiz that will place you in one of 8 "political personality" types. Check it out. And let me know what type it gives you.

Futurebird's Political Personality Quiz

I wanted to make a quiz that would give you a type based on how you relate to political ideas-- It doesn't tell you party affiliation or anything like that. Also, it is short. I'm going to try to improve it, so let me know what "type" you get so I can see if they match up the way they should!
