They Could Always Go Work in Factories

Teri Adams, Head of Independence Hall Tea Party and School Voucher Activist:

Our ultimate goal is to shut down public schools and have private schools only, eventually returning responsibility for payment to parents and private charities. It’s going to happen piecemeal and not overnight. It took us years to get into this mess and it’s going to take years to get out of it.



In other words, Adams would like education to be, along with medical care, available only to those who can pony up the cash for it.

The article I’ve linked to includes a few quotes from people speculating about what drives the American right’s hostility towards public education. The ban on teacher-led prayer is invoked, along with the mercenary desire to funnel the money now paid into public schools into private hands.

I suspect it’s much more simple than that. Without universal education, the far right wouldn’t have to contend with so many pesky arguments about the facts of history, math, science, etc.

I'm sorry, Underlankers, but I'm not going to get into another long wrangle with you over your bizarre and idiosyncratic reading of history -- one that at times is as ridiculous and self-serving as what I've encountered among tea-partiers. I file this irrational interpretation of "talking" of yours alongside your earlier remarks about German female victims of Russian rapine at the end of the war and your idiotic attempt to smear Howard Zinn as a holocaust revisionist on par with Irving.

What talking? Noting that those Soviet soldiers raped German women and were reigned in, and that the Germans were foolish enough to fight and lose a war of annihilation against a stronger nation? That never justified either German rapes or Soviet rapes, but it does serve as a reminder that the Axis-Soviet war was total war in all its horror.

And as far as claiming Zinn was a Holocaust denier I never said that. I said that he cited David Irving as a source, which indicates he had a ludicrously sloppy methodology. I believe I've called Noam Chomsky a genocide denier, but I did not use those words with Zinn.
