Jon Stewart made his first appearance on a Sunday morning political show, appearing on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace (incidentally one of the lowest rated Sunday morning shows; Meet the Press with David Gregory is the highest rated). During the course of his interview, Stewart said "Who are the most consistently misinformed media viewers? … Fox viewers, consistently, every poll." Turns out Stewart was wrong according to Politifact (a website that checks politicians/ electoral candidates' statements, but also will analyze media coverage of specific news stories). While it was true that in two surveys, Fox News viewers were the least informed and in some others "merely near the bottom," but Politifact noted that on some specific news stories-- Fox News viewers viewers were occasionally more informed that Daily Show viewers (but not other media outlets). So ultimately, Politifact declared Stewart's statement "False." Stewart made a public apology, saying it would be highly irresponsible not to issue a correction in good faith.

Stewart then spent part of his latest program pointing out PolitiFact has found questionable several statements aired by the Fox News Channel — including two PolitiFact National lies of the year and a 2010 Pants-on-Fire statement about banishing Christmas from Texas textbooks. Stewart termed his survey the ascent of Mount Fib. As Stewart listed each item, a motion graphic appeared under him, with the list eventually became so long it crowded his face out of the camera shot.

I also thought after seeing the Stewart interview with Chris Wallace (1.) he's incredibly fast on his feet in interviews (2.) One of the most talented comic wits in the league of Mort Sahl, or Lenny Bruce or even George Carlin. (3.) Has arrived at his stated goal of aspiring to be like Mark Twain and Will Rodgers (4.) Stewart's comment's on how movement conservatives can't and will never understand that political ideology isn't the only thing that motivates everyone else ("Hollywood, the press") unlike conservatives -- which is why Chris Wallace will never "get" Stewart.

Date: 22/6/11 21:54 (UTC)This is generally why I don't like Stewart. He was wrong but he makes a joke of how he was wrong and he changes the argument ever so subtle as to make his audience not to care anymore about his original error.
I like political humor... I just HATE political humor being used as a form of debate. It's the new sophistry.
'Stewart's comment's on how movement conservatives can't and will never understand that political ideology isn't the only thing that motivates everyone else ("Hollywood, the press") unlike conservatives -- which is why Chris Wallace will never "get" Stewart.'
Rather ironic when it's a given with the left that conservatives all think one way for very shallow reasons.

Date: 22/6/11 23:38 (UTC)However, it's probably unfair to say that it should be the job of such a show to educate (likewise Beck etc.). But perhaps it is the job of the show to try to direct people towards good information sources and to call out bad ones. I think that's what Stewart does exceptionally well. I don't think TDS is a news programme, but it is a media watchdog programme. We have a show here called Media Watch (http://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/). It runs for 15 minutes a week and has been going for 22 years. In that time it has broken some major stories regarding scandals in the media including outright falsifying of information and corruption. One of the highest profile ones was where it was exposed that most of the right wing shock jocks in Melbourne and Sydney were taking money from companies to be presented favourably within news and current affairs programmes (Cash for Comments).
TDS exposes a lot of bullshit in the media, this is an important public service. By doing it with jokes it engages a wide audience in an important conversation, something for which it should be commended. Where it falls down, however, is in the gross partisanship. The real excellence of the Media Watch show I mentioned above is that it goes after all outlets for all things - including the station it is on (it has led to important people within the national broadcaster being fired). It could be argued that it is left wing, but mostly by people who think that anything the government funds must be left wing. Regardless, it is truly independent and equally critical of all.

If Fox can't understand that Stewart is doing humor, not political activism, then yes they must all think one way because it's obvious to anyone with at least half a brain.

Outside of that I follow stories that if find interesting on one of those sites or through here or that someone I know posts/forwards to me and read widely on them trying to find opinions and views from all over the political spectrum.

Date: 23/6/11 00:32 (UTC)I think Stewart looked at that one poll that was posted here about Global Warming, TARP, etc. He would be right if he cited that one poll, but it's not 'consistently' as he claimed. So, he wasn't lying, just probably was misinformed as he didn't know about the other polls.

Date: 23/6/11 00:36 (UTC)What I liked most about the interview with Wallace was how Stewart said that his position is one of being opposed to corruption. His criticism of those media outlets deemed to be too liberal by Faux News is pretty accurate. They love their team coverage events that distract from everything else that goes on in the world.
