Given that this is "Science and Technology" month, I thought I'd share this amazingly awesome anecdote (see link) about Thomas Kuhn (one of the most important philosophers of science in recent history) and Errol Morris, his erstwhile graduate student.  It's a wonderful story illuminating (a) the politics of graduate school and (b) a form of argument (The Ashtray Argument) that only my lack of physical proximity has prevented me from using with some of my [livejournal.com profile] talk_politics  interlocutors, although I don't see it here, and (c) even an interesting question about Kuhn's philosophy. I suppose that this incident provides important evidence for those inclined to see heavy Wittgensteinian influences on Kuhn.

(Also, Kuhn smoked 6 or 7 packs of cigarettes/day, crazy!!)

ETA (per mod request): This is an anecdote about Thomas Kuhn throwing an ashtray at one of his graduate students when the graduate student asks a question about the fundamentals of Kuhn's phil. of sci.

I can tell the anecdote was written by a philosophy person by the intentionally obfuscated style laced with buzzwords and the quasi scientific looking references that just link to a blurb in a different spot that could have been inserted just as easily at the location of the reference mark.

Philosophy people are all about making things look much more scientific and obscure than they are.

"His often repeated, most scathing complaint concerned Whiggishness — in history of science, the tendency to evaluate and interpret past scientific theories not on their own terms, but in the context of current knowledge. "

Wonderful clarity there -.-

Oh and use of dashes. many dashes! Handle it!

In the context of an anecdote, they come off as very... what's a good word. Finals are brain my draining.

Also, in the context of politics, what is your point?

Sometimes you get angry enough to throw things at other people? One time this philosopher threw something at someone else and this is a metaphor for graduate school and then wrote an irritatingly boring story about it?

I guess out of all of this, what do you see as the interesting question about Kuhn's philosophy?

Exactly my thoughts (http://community.livejournal.com/talk_politics/922913.html?thread=70972705#t70972705).

Settle down, chief. Your internet-bred hostility and insecurity vis a vis philosophy (in the history of science-- known as Adolescent Regression Syndrome, being as how inopportune and structureless electronic spheres of interaction throw people in unfamiliar-- and uncomfortable places, finding themselves buffetted by a stunning sense of not-knowing-what-is-going-on, often found in chimpanzees transported to USO shows) is really quite a wonder to watch. You've already commented four times before the goddamn thing is out of the oven. Sheesh. You look ridiculous!

How would we ever know if one is actually more accurate than another? We can make arguments based on our interpretation of evidence and that's about the best we can do. Such a thing assumes some ultimate truth that we can compare such things to. No such thing exists. It's all negotiation and opinion.

So I reject both people's binary perspective and say its somewhere int he middle. Done.

If memory serves, there've been previous complaints made by no one else but yourself (http://community.livejournal.com/talk_politics/914337.html?thread=70004385#t70004385) when people were being re-directed to external stories without the OP offering even the slightest summary of what the links have been arguing about.

In fact you yourself once said, bless you for providing a text summary
(http://community.livejournal.com/talk_politics/871907.html?thread=65867235#t65867235).

There's no rule about that. But I find this amusing so I wanted to share.

"I'd like to share an anecdote which illuminates the politics of graduate school and a form of argument" was essentially what you said. Would you like to expand a bit on that if it's not too much of a pain?

Thanks for sharing this. I found it interesting, if not fascinating. I'm sorry to see that you've gotten such an unenthusiastic response, but I suppose it would probably be more appropriate in a philosophy community.
