If you thought anti-science covid-deniers were just a problem for the west, turn your eyes to the east!

So much for that whole 'all Asians are smart' stereotype.
Against the sound advice of the experts and government, these hooligans are out on the street putting their lives and the lives of their fellow citizens at risk! Some of them aren't wearing masks properly, some not at all. Also noteworthy - I've yet to hear a single Chinese protestor denounce Hitler.
This is a tough spot for Xi and he's going to have to be tough to get through it. The 'quarantine centers' he's building look like a nice start - some will supposedly be able to 'house' close to a 100,000 of these trouble makers until they're deemed safe.
What say you?
What more can Xi do to calm this storm? Can those evil anti-goverment protestors be rehabilitated? Is redemption even possible or are they just too far gone?

Date: 30/11/22 01:18 (UTC)After the initial mid-level-management bungling of the early months of the pandemic (which is exactly why it spread so quickly all over the world), China was seen as a model case for dealing with it in a top down method, issuing central government edicts that then filtered all the way down to small town council groups going door-to-door to make sure locals were weathering curfews and lockdowns safely.
But that was predicated on really selling the idea to the common person that COVID was really, really dangerous and therefore worth derailing their entire lives for, for an indeterminate time.
And now that same populace is brimming with people who consider total lockdown the only sane reaction to a spike in infection rates, and is happy to demonize and shame anyone in favor of less extreme behavior. Basically the sort of shame-based behavior I saw in the Bay Area, that caused people who ostensibly "believed in science" to wear a face mask when jogging alone in a park on a windy day, but cranked up much higher because in China there is generally no scientific apparatus separate from the ruling party to provide scientific recommendations that could even seem unbiased, let alone actually be politically unbiased. (Think a two-party system creates polarization in the US? Try a one-party system.)
So now he's gotta de-program an entire country, and convince them that hey, you're gonna get infected with it after all, it's just a matter of when, and it was always only about slowing down the infection rate, not protecting you from this monstrous debilitating invisible death sentence. Trusting us now is contingent on you accepting that we were lying to you then.
Another thing I gotta wonder on top of this, though, is: How effective are the Chinese-developed vaccines? 'Cause the ones here in the 'states took a while to crank out, but they've been damned effective, and pretty effectively deployed too. Shouldn't everyone in the whole of China be vaccinated twice over at this point, rendering all lockdowns pointless?
