Back in 2013, the then Dem controlled Senate used the so called nuclear option, in a vote 52 to 48, to require only a majority vote to end a filibuster of all executive and judicial nominees, excluding Supreme Court nominees, rather than the 3/5 of votes previously required. Then in 2017, the Rep controlled Senate did the same, in a vote 52 to 48, to require only a majority vote to end a filibuster of Supreme Court nominees. Just to remind, 60% supermajority is still required to end filibusters on legislation.
The GOP took the Dem filibuster rule change. That was the mistake of the Dems who timed their move poorly, as the polls were showing they were headed for a loss in 2014, and essentially made themselves powerless in the minority. If they were going to do what they did, they should have done it in the beginning of Obama's term and taken advantage of it from 2009 to 2014 - not just a few months from the end of 2013 to early 2014. The timing was dumb on the part of the Dems. It could have been Obama that would've filled all those judicial seats, not Trump, if the Dems had pulled that trigger earlier to include the SCOTUS pick which they did not do but McConnell did instead. If you are going to pull the trigger, make sure you make a hole big enough to get everything you want while you can as early as you can.
Now the GOP is going to make the same mistake the Dems made by taking action just before they lose the majority in the Senate to make a short-term gain. When the Dems take over they are going to take the GOP's error in getting SCOTUS seats. The speed the GOP takes to get someone on the bench is going to be a regret for the GOP.
Then, there is the matter of making no legislation limiting the number of SCOTUS and other justices while they had the majority in both Houses. By the time the Dems are finished rebalancing the SCOTUS and Federal Judicial courts, the GOP will be powerless to do anything about it. It will be impossible to undo what the Dems plan to do as they'll legislate a max cap on the number of SCOTUS and Justices while they hold all 3 branches of government.
The only way the GOP will be able to undo that or add above it will require them to retake all three branches themselves. Given the state of the Republican party and its fractured nature under Trump that will take years, maybe even decades. In the meantime, without filibuster options and no legislative tools to delay or withhold funds the GOP that do manage to get elected back to the Senate and House will be powerless. The only airtime they will get is on FOX, QAnon and the other right-wing sites. We all know that the audience of those sites, while being very loud, is dying off.
Maybe the Russians will help the GOP in targeting younger audiences through social media. The Dems may actually get a chance to crack down on that too. By that I mean they should make it illegal for any foreign interference in US political affairs including the use of social media. Any US company, organization, non-profit, PAC or website that accepts any compensation in any form should result in the CEO, CFO, and all board members personally liable and subject to fines and at least 2 years in jail.
Then of course there is the matter of campaign finance reform, and they can always put a cap on the maximum money allowed to be spent limited to a certain amount in each campaign and have donations from both parties go to a central fund. From there the money could be split equally among the parties, thus getting rid of any incentive for a politician to accept money in exchange for personal favors. No individual donations to a person, just a party, and then no matter the amount given it would be split between the two major parties.
Why would companies and people give money if they couldn't just target the politician of their choice or the party of their choice? They wouldn't. And this is not a bad thing. There is too much money as it is in campaigning. All you need are debates, and public TV can show them at little or no cost to the campaigns. If anyone is interested they can watch the candidates and conventions on public TV. There is no need for all these crazy commercials and adds if neither party can afford to do it and people and companies stop donating to campaigns. Or maybe I'm being too un-American here?

I agree strongly with this.

Not un-American at all, I feel the same way.

There is no upside for republicans to not do this, the possibility of a dem sweep in November would be even more reason to push on.
If the roles were reversed, dems wouldnt hesitate.
