Since I'm new here I thought I'd start off by creating a hot and heated debate.  However I would like to stray from the usual debates and go down a slightly different road. I get e-mails every morning that report on hundreds of violent crimes that were committed the day before.

I'd like to take on a different type of debate than the kind I normally have. I want to debate how to solve crime. Not the usual gun control, crime control, ect. Obviously none of what we have done so far is working. Let's come up with something new, something different, something that will work.

Just throwing it around. Something about a new president, who is "all about change" has got me in the mood to come up with something that could actually change things.

Pelosi says birth control will help economy

<< Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi boldly defended a move to add birth control funding to the new economic "stimulus" package, claiming "contraception will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government."

Pelosi, the mother of 5 children and 6 grandchildren, who once said, "Nothing in my life will ever, ever compare to being a mom," seemed to imply babies are somehow a burden on the treasury.

The revelation came during an exchange Sunday morning on ABC's THIS WEEK.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Hundreds of millions of dollars to expand family planning services. How is that stimulus?

PELOSI: Well, the family planning services reduce cost. They reduce cost. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for children's health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those - one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So no apologies for that?

PELOSI: No apologies. No. we have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy.

Belgian Government Collapses After Botched Bank Bailout ``Vandeurzen tendered his resignation on Friday Dec. 19, 2008 over the handling of the botched Fortis bank bailout. The resignation comes after Belgium's highest court said the government had tried to influence the judges that last week blocked the bailout and sale of the troubled bank.''

Icelandic government falls amid financial crisis, protests `` (CNN) -- Iceland's ruling coalition resigned Monday, three months after the collapse of the country's currency, stock market and several major banks, and following months of public protests, Kristjan Kristjansson, a spokesman for the prime minister told CNN.''

Those were only puny governments and so they don't count.

FTW!

While ther may've been some initial tension, apparently Pelosi really likes working with Obama. In an interview this morning she said, that in general and especially when contrasted with her interactions with the former president, she always finds herself leaving the meetings with a big smile on her face.

I'm curious of your experience. Are you hearing much good news about the economy lately?

I've been wondering about the way President Obama has been talking. I guess it's the no bullshit approach. But seeing how the economy is an issue of confidence, stating we're heading for at least a year of hard times seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I'm very critical of President Changeyoucanbelievein who is promising/offering taxcuts (as per the Republicans) where there is no guarantee such money will be spent, rather then sufficient actual spending where stimulus is guaranteed (tickle down, etc.)

There's a series of radio commercials playing here where they profile the good news of local companies defiant of the economy. But mostly I'm hearing it's all going to shit. Surely Stephen Corbert can't be right in that we should be investing in Campbell's Soup, Spam, Kraft Dinner (mac'n'cheese) and booze. Especially booze. Surely energy is a great investment. Given a choice between booze and freezing in the dark... never mind. I'll admit that's a bit of a toughie.

Problem is it's self prophecy. Bad news sells so the media reports bad news. This doesn't exactly instill confidence. Then President Obama confirms our worse fears with good news tailing off, "...and we'll work together to get through this.", which is this HUGE mother of an "if". Because there's a whole whack of weirdo's (like Rush Limbaugh) who want to see the President fail.

Fortunately there's a few who are showing some optimism. Most assume the oil patch will recover quite nicely, it's just a matter of when. Rob Breakenridge seems to have some hope invested in smarter folks who you would think knows these things. After all it is a cycle of sorts, eh? Eventually the doom'n'gloom will get repetitive and the media will change it's tune. It's the only time good news sells papers.

The question I ask is; are you hearing any good business/economic news lately?
