FINAL OPEN THREAD: 2nd Bomber Apprehended

Figured it's worth an update after 12 hours:

* Second suspect was arrested, alive, brought to Mount Auburn hospital in Cambridge, MA. He went and hid in a boat after they lifted the travel restriction. Very sneaky, Boston Police.

* Still finding unidentifiable bags around Watertown where the second suspect was holed up.

* Three other people were arrested by the FBI in New Bedford, not far from UMass Dartmouth where the second suspect was a student. No other word on this yet.

* At some point today, the police scanners reported an old man, approximately 60-70 years old, with a bomb vest. No word whatsoever on what happened after they got to him.

he will make a swell bunkmate.

[identity profile] telemann.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
He'll be in solitary at the Colorado prison if they don't execute him, provided he's found guilty in a trial. He wasn't read his Miranda rights either according to a press conference immediately after the arrest given by the Governor, Mayor, the FBI, et al. Federal bombing statues have an exemption for Miranda rights (I think I recall that correctly).

[identity profile] musicpsych.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what they said about the Miranda rights. I was surprised to hear "Mirandize" as a sort of verb (like, "they will not Mirandize him right away").

[identity profile] existentme.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, and it only remains to be seen if they do not also combatanize and Padilla-ize him.

[identity profile] musicpsych.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha :)

[identity profile] rimpala.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
they would have to put him in solitary, I'm sure there are plenty of inmates with strong feelings about the bombing, particularly over the 8-year old being killed.

[identity profile] allhatnocattle.livejournal.com 2013-04-21 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
the most we can hope for is to get him buried in secrecy so his grave don't get violated!

[identity profile] devil-ad-vocate.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
He looks like a kid who could have had a bright future. Other than an outstanding job by law enforcement, there isn't much to celebrate here.

Image

That backpack is larger than his torso.

[identity profile] musicpsych.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think they said that the backpack is a medical kit.

[identity profile] merig00.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It is... If you look closely it actually says "police" on it. I'm just comparing for the size.

[identity profile] rimpala.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
It is sad that he's so young, I mistakenly said I don't feel too sorry for him, but someone corrected me and made a good point at how tragic this is.

[identity profile] yes-justice.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
His frontal lobe hasn't even fully developed. Dammit. We failed.

[identity profile] allhatnocattle.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
As if there wasn't enough racial stereotypes of the fuckin' Chechen people already!

[identity profile] pepsquad.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 12:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the above comment is about the growth of every humans brain, how the frontal lobe or impulse control center of the brain isn't fully developed until you are 25.

[identity profile] yes-justice.livejournal.com 2013-04-21 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, and also ahnoc was ribbing me likely.

[identity profile] sophia-sadek.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Frontal lobes are overrated.

[identity profile] kylinrouge.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not okay for the media to do this, so I'd rather not see this giant image. Maybe I should take a break from this community for a while.

[identity profile] telemann.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, then the complaint would be from conspiracy types demanding proof, saying it's all faked. And this photograph is *nothing* compared to the one of his brother's dead body on the operating table, which was leaked and analyzed in great detail on Reddit.

I certainly didn't see that photograph on any "media" (in the traditional sense of the word).

These people want attention, and plastering their photos everywhere is giving it to them.

[identity profile] sophia-sadek.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
He is not a giant.

[identity profile] yes-justice.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well done Boston!

[identity profile] rimpala.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like they still have work to do alas, as much as I feel for the victims of the bombing, I also feel bad that a whole city is living in lock down like that, I wonder how many people are separated from each other right now.

[identity profile] dreadfulpenny81.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm amazed this capture happened in less than a week. The better technology gets, the harder it's going to become for criminals to do their dirty work. The police and the FBI did an amazing job, and the people giving tips that lead to his capture should be applauded for their vigilance.

[identity profile] rimpala.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
There's a reason crime caper films have gotten more and more outlandish, you'd think the cast of Ocean's 12 or The Fast and the Furious wouldn't be making much of a profit when they're spending so much money on stealing money.

[identity profile] rimpala.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad he's taken alive, that way they can find out if more people are involved in this, and what the motive was.

[identity profile] vehemencet-t.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Wow this thing has been just so crazy and convoluted.

[identity profile] meus-ovatio.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The police didn't find him. The manhunt didn't accomplish anything. They called the hunt off and let people out of their homes and viola, they found him. Everything else was state security theater for the sake of the cameras and the media. The funny part is, they found him almost immediately after letting people out of their houses. Also:

[identity profile] telemann.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha.

I wonder if the law enforcement people who checked that house with the boat are going to get a crack across their knuckles (administratively speaking) for missing him.

He didn't get out of Boston, and he didn't kill anyone else.

[identity profile] meus-ovatio.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
True. The point being, community involvement is a looked-over asset. People used to make these things called "posses" when the community was under attack. Now they're just told to hide in their homes. I disagree with this approach.

"A hospital spokesperson said early this morning that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was still alive, however the FBI asked they give no updates on his condition."

Why?

[identity profile] telemann.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
This link was posted ten minutes ago and said he's still in serious condition and unable to answer questions. (http://www.10news.com/news/u-s-world/boston-bombing-suspect-dzhokhar-tsarnaev-caught-04202013)

Absolutely speculation on my part: I would assume this means he's either on a ventilator, or he's sedated for medical reasons.

[identity profile] existentme.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I'd assumed he was not in the best of condition. I only wondered why the FBI asked that the hospital give no updates on his condition, and further, the more important why, of why whomever that information was conveyed to did not directly ask that question at the time.

Obviously, I don't know the context in which the information (the FBI wants no condition updates given) was delivered, but still, how is that not a relevant question for a so-called journalist to pose?

[identity profile] telemann.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree, it's an odd request for them. What's with the cloak and dagger routine.

[identity profile] telemann.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I also wonder if we will find out if Tamerlan Tsranaev was killed by his brother hitting him with a SUV and then dragging him for a few feet. I don't know if the autopsy will be released to the public though. And ultimately I suppose it won't make a bean of difference, except it seems the older brother is the one who planned and executed the bombings.

[identity profile] sandwichwarrior.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Horrible thought for the day:

Right wingers desperatly wanted the bombers to be Muslim.

Left wingers desperatly wanted the bombers to be white.

The bombers ended up being Chechen so I guess it's a win-win.

[identity profile] sandwichwarrior.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Like I said, win win.

[identity profile] htpcl.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
White Chechen Muslims.

[identity profile] sophia-sadek.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Chechens are the uebermenschen of the Islamist world.

[identity profile] sophia-sadek.livejournal.com 2013-04-20 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I am fascinated about the way that the FBI approached his brother and told him they knew what Web sites he visited. Back in the day, they would only visit relatives, neighbors, and employers with questions about questionable political involvement.
