The violence in the anarchistic portion of Somalia continues as can be seen in this story of a foreign raid launched on Somalia by what appears to be the French. Somalia has been both the anarchist and libertarian paradise for the last few years since its dictator fell. It is pretty much the standard definition of a failed state. Since this has been reality and been reality for quite some time, what would be required to make all of Somalia like Somaliland?
For that matter, since Somaliland is at least semi-functional, shouldn't it be recognized by the international community at large? After all, Kosovo was recognized just recently but Somaliland has been functioning for quite a bit longer in a much more precarious situation (chiefly due to either the desires of neighboring powers or general Western neglect of Africa except to grudgingly give it aid that is none too effective as
mahnmut pointed out in a post of his. It seems to my (chiefly theoretical) eyes that recognizing Somaliland would go a long way to recognizing that at least part of Somalia has been functional instead of warlord-ruled. What I think should be done with the warlord-ruled parts of Somalia proper is a difficult question given that the young people have grown up without any memory of a functioning society. I would chiefly recommend finding a solution like that in Iraq followed by both Saddam Al-Majid and the US Occupation forces in 2007-a system that recognizes the power of local warlords and gives them investments in a broader situation. I'm curious to know how other people in this community would propose solutions for the situation in Somalia. Preferably solutions that don't involve foreign occupation, which has already been tried and proven to be a failure.
