But let's be clear, if an openly atheist candidate were able to make it to the running, he would fail due to his atheism. Period.

I doubt that. An atheist candidate wouldn't get to the point where they'd have a shot more because of their other points of view than the religious one. Chances are that the atheist would come from the left, and those who would vote based on religion would not be voting for him or her anyway.
