Believe me, some of the people I've known looking for work apply for those crappy throwaway jobs. They tend to get rejected as being "overqualified."

But the OP is not asking for advice on how to survive being an over-50 job hunter who's been unemployed for more than a year.

The OP is asking employers who systematically shut out unemployed and over -50 jobhunters whether they also support some government provision to ensure that this large pool of the possibly permanently unemployed doesn't end up in dire poverty.
